The first place on wich you come across leaving Ancona is Portonovo. A small village, once inhabited only by fishermen, situated at the foot of the Conero, surrounded by Mediterranean sea. Overlooking the sea, you can admire the church of Santa Maria of Portonovo, a Romanesque masterpiece built by the monks Camaldolesi that once inhabited these area. Not far from the church is instead the Napoleonic fort built to defend the coast from the British. Also on the promenade is the eighteenth-century Clementina Tower built to defend the Conero by pirates. Portonovo is surrounded by pristine beaches like those of Trave and Mezzavalle, where there aren't bathing establishments. The Trave is a narrow reef that stretches into the sea for about twelve miles. Here the sea is very clean, as is the nearby sandy beach of Mezzavalle. These two beaches are accessible through certain paths in the park of Mount Conero and seaborne. In front of the tower of Portonovo is the most accessible and equipped beach of Torre. |

THE CHURCH OF ST MARY OF PORTONOVO
The church of Santa Maria di Portonovo is one of the greatest examples of Romanesque style in the Marches. The emotion of the place, just up on the shore, lives with the poignant elegance of the white forms, in an atmosphere of vibrant spirituality. Imagination Flying, and going back 800 years of Auroras and dusks, with a trill of suggestion, recalling the times when the church of Santa Maria, together with the adjacent monastic building occupied by Benedictine monks, were the only evidence of life in Portonovo. The church and the place, offered to the Benedictine brothers the ideal requirement for respect the terms of the sacred rule that requires them to work, prayer, humility and anonymity.
THE CLEMENTINE TOWER AND THE NAPOLEONIC FORT They were the favorite places of the poet Adolfo de Basis from Ancona (1863-1924), the Tower was built in 1716 by order of Pope Clement XI Albani on a model medieval perhaps anticipated by the constructive genius of Leonardo. From its terrace, protected by sturdy trusses, the guards discovered the whole stretch of the Gulf of Portonovo up to the cliffs of the Two Sisters (the popular two twins rocks).
