From 400 years, in the sanctuary of Manoppello, Abruzzo (near Pescara in the bishopric of Chieti), people worship a veil on which is engraved the face of Jesus Christ, with eyes open and with the signs of passion. Popular tradition has it always regarded as a relic, but historical studies have never been particularly thoroughly, until started to deal with the Jesuit Heinrich Pfeiffer, professor of art history at the Pontifical Gregorian University and one of the world's leading experts in Christian iconography, and suor Blandina Paschalis Schlömer who recognized in the face of Manoppello the perfectly superimposed with the face of the Shroud, with the collaboration of the Redemptorist Andreas Resch who provided images to the computer. Father Pfeiffer has instead mainly verified the compatibility of the Holy Face of Christ in art with depictions of the first millennium

The sanctuary of the Holy Face which, after almost five centuries is still a place of worship for hundreds of thousands of faithful. The legend says that an angel as a pilgrim, handed in 1506 a small bundle to Dr. James Anthony Leonello with the recommendation to keep alive the devotion, that would bring peace and spiritual and material welfare. By opening the package the man saw the image of Jesus in pain imprinted on the veil. The veil is now placed between two glass panes, the image is clearly visible in the back with colors that can be identified only by a certain angle and the expression of the figure represented in it is not reproducible by hand, as if it were a real appearance . Pope Clement XI in 1718 garanted a plenary indulgence to all pilgrims who came to visit the shrine. The Sanctuary is currently administrate by the Capuchin Friars Minor with the adjoining house of the Pilgrim. The festivities to celebrate the Holy Face is the second Sunday of May.
