Everything starts in Pietralcina
Pietrelcina is a picturesque small country made by wide boulevards, graceful houses, manicured gardens, the ancient signs of its ancient origins, and places that remind us of the birth and life of the Holy Friar.
An ancient door recalls the baronial origins of the country, a Madonna `s arch and three tiles that with artistic ingenuity depicting St. Michael` s Crowned and Sant `Antonio. Basically, the "Castle district with old houses built of hard stone and herds, resting on solid rock with its characteristic dark color. In this environment peasant and Christian was born May 25, 1887 Francis, fourth son of the family of Horace Forgione and Maria Giuseppa De Nunzio. Francesco Forgione teens living in this environment peaceful and quiet it will score in an extraordinary way, spreading his time between the church, home and country. His parents, like most of the villagers who worked the land, took care of the animals, breathing world of that campaign. In this rural environment the feel strongly the fundamental values of solidarity, friendship, sacrifice and the family. And here was born and returned to arise every day Padre Pio, here returns to a child, adolescent, young man `s imprint of his footsteps, which never vanish, because the footsteps of the Saints are not cleared.

Padre Pio
Padre Pio, illuminated by the Lord to live "amongst the ranks of the ecclesiastical militia", chose the cloister and sought refuge "under the flag of the Poor man of Assisi".
As well as Pietrelcina that recalls Assisi, and the Gargano that recalls Verna, Padre Pio had deeper, interior affinities with St. Francis. The Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza ("Home for the relief of the Suffering") flourished like the love that St. Francis gave to the lepers. His fondness for the Madonna and the little church of S. Maria delle Grazie mirrored St. Francis` preference for the Madonna and the little church of S. Maria degli Angeli, the Porziuncola. The same love for Jesus on the cross gave them both the Lord`s stigmata. The same discretion regarding the stigmata, the "secrets of the King", was found in the stigmatised man from Verna and the stigmatised man from the Gargano.
Padre Pio`s piety was shown in specifically Franciscan devotions that centred around Christ, the mystery of the Nativity, in the presence of the Eucharist, in the drama of the Passion. Padre Pio lived these mysteries in the daily celebration of mass, with the same devotion that St. Francis showed to the blood of the cross. Our Lady, has always held the leading position in the heart of Padre Pio. This love was

The Sanctuary
"There are works which, by their nature, mark the passing of an epoch, happen so always, and Puglia, in this respect, preserve some of the most extraordinary examples of this phenomenon, we think of Castel del Monte and its singular history that marked a fundamental step of the twelfth century. That of Renzo Piano, undoubtedly, belongs to this kind of work. "
(Sandro Frisullo)
