Born in Corinaldo (Ancona) on 16 October 1890, daughter of peasants Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini, Maria was the second of six children. The Goretti family soon moved in the Agro Pontino. In 1900 his father died, his mother had to start working and left to Mary's the task of to looking after the house and his brothers. Alessandro Serenelli, a young man of 18 years, fell in love with Mary. On 5 July 1902 he attacked and tried to rape her. Its resistance killed her stabbed. Mary died after an operation the next day, and before expiring forgave Serenelli. The murderess was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Repented and converted only after dreaming that Mary told him he would reach heaven. When he was released from prison after 27 years asked forgiveness from the mother of Mary. Maria Goretti was proclaimed a saint in 1950 by Pope Pius XII
