After the visit and Holy Mass in the Basilica of Loreto, is advisable to visit Manoppello, near Pescara, with the Shrine dedicated to the Holy Face. The recommended way is to take the A14 motorway direction south. Take the exit onto A25/E80 toward Roma, (toll road) then take back the exit Alanno-Scafa toward Alanno/Scafa. Follow directions to Manoppello. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Have a nice trip!
The Sanctuary of the Holy Face
The sanctuary of the Holy Face which, after almost five centuries is still a place of worship for hundreds of thousands of faithful. The legend says that an angel as a pilgrim, handed in 1506 a small bundle to Dr. James Anthony Leonello with the recommendation to keep alive the devotion, that would bring peace and spiritual and material welfare. By opening the package the man saw the image of Jesus in pain imprinted on the veil. The veil is now placed between two glass panes, the image is clearly visible in the back with colors that can be identified only by a certain angle and the expression of the figure represented in it is not reproducible by hand, as if it were a real appearance . Pope Clement XI in 1718 garanted a plenary indulgence to all pilgrims who came to visit the shrine. The Sanctuary is currently administrate by the Capuchin Friars Minor with the adjoining house of the Pilgrim. The festivities to celebrate the Holy Face is the second Sunday of May.
